Sometimes I pretended I was Alkyone, pretended so hard that it was as though I walked in a different skin. I would sit on the stone wall outside the inn and stare at the dust devils dancing in the road, willing them to move. My heart would leap because it would seem as though one had heard and answered and then, inevitably, it would die away or move in a contradictory direction.
