Jill Seidenstein
Excerpt:
While this counted as exercise, it still did not put me in the category of athlete. Our high school was full of them; they strutted through the halls in their sports jerseys, assembled in groups in the common areas, and even had their own extra-curricular club – the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. No way in hell was I getting near that shit. During the football season, we had mandatory pep rallies every Friday morning, first thing before classes started. ... it wasn’t until my senior year that I realized I could arrive to school strategically late to miss the quasi-fascist gathering with homoerotic displays by the players running around on the gymnasium floor to the booming beats of Queen’s “We Are the Champions.”
