Excerpt

On a warm late afternoon near to shore on the Western Sea, when K-Nought's last glows of the day banded the clouds over the western horizon with orange, red, and purple and the first lamps of the city of San Lazaro glittered on the mesas inland to the east, when the waves splashed on the yacht's hull too softly to mask the chatter of the colony's elite at the bow and below deck, while the twin moons hung overhead like pale, battered sentinels, the governor of New California committed suicide for the third time.

Bio

I was born in Pennsylvania, grew up in rural Missouri, and came to Houston for college and never left. I have a Ph.D. in biochemistry and work as a patent agent for an intellectual property boutique law firm. I'm married with a 1-year-old son.

I've been a science fiction fan since reading Childhood's End in sixth grade, and started writing it soon after. I attended Clarion West in 2001. My short stories have appeared in Odyssey, Neverworlds, and Short Stories, but I've been focusing on novels for most of the past few years.

Publications

"The Evidence of Things Seen" in Odyssey

"The White Witch of Bendugu" in Neverworlds

Untitled piece, and god knows what title the Italian translator gave it, in Short Stories

Writing Description

I mostly write hardish SF with a focus on believable characters rather than gadgets.

Goals

I'm about halfway through the second draft of my current work in progress, an SF novel of about 90,000 words, about a postmodern religion and an AI revolt. The excerpt I've submitted is the novel's opening paragraph.

My goal for the Write-a-thon is to finish the second draft.
