2011 Clarion West Write-a-thon!

Hey everyone! It’s write-a-thon time again!

I hope this past year was a fantastic year for everyone — I can’t believe it went by so fast! And here we are, with another chance to challenge ourselves, write well, and raise money for Clarion West.

This year’s Clarion West Write-a-thon is the seventh annual one, which tempts me to do crazy things with my goals for this year. Write a story for each of the seven deadly sins? Set it on one of the seven seas — using one of the seven dwarfs? I hope the Write-a-thon gets you similarly excited!

This year’s Write-a-thon will run from June 19 – July 21st, in conjunction, as always, with Clarion West. If this is your first Write-a-thon, that’s fantastic! Be bold, set yourself a challenge that feels good for you — anything from 25 – 2500 (or 25,000?!?) words a week, or pick pages a day, or completed stories that you can do during that timeframe. Challenge yourself in public, on our facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/#!/home.php?sk=group_189473184421335&ap=1 ), in our forums, or play along on your blog. (You can even be quiet if you want to. We won’t tell anyone.)

Our goal is that to reach 100 participants, and 270 donors — this is further and farther than we’ve tried in the past, but we know with your help we can make it. The larger goal is that we all set aside time this summer to just write.

Go to http://clarionwest.org/Write-a-thon_Participant_Registration to sign up! If this year isn’t your year (perhaps you’ve gotten seven years of bad luck?) please take the time support those who are writing.

Each year of the write-a-thon has gotten bigger so far. Let’s make this our super seventh spectacular year!

As an additional incentive for folks to participate this year: Kate Schaefer, Karen G. Anderson, and Vonda McIntyre will each donate $1 per participant up to 99 participants. Once we reach 100 participants, they'll each donate $500! That's $297 if only 99 people sign up for the WaT, and $1500 if at least 100 people sign up for the WaT. This is a great excuse for you to concentrate your effort on that novel that's been kicking around in the back of your mind, or those stories you've wanted to work on. So please sign up!
Okay, time to get down to business. 1000 words or more per week that remain in the first draft. This doesn't count words that fall prey to the internal editor. May not sound like much of a goal, but any goal I set for myself right now is a good thing. The best kind of therapy. shagin
Ok, here we go. I've set myself the goal of finishing a story a week this year, just like the participants! What other goals do we have this year?
Get my available-online and published writing consolidated in one place. Get a foothold on figuring out this unfamiliar short-story format and its needs. Frame and write a short story (my 2nd) where others can watch and give feedback, finish editing of first and start submitting it other places. Mir Plemmons
So far so good. 1000 words a day, though I'm working that into an average. Some days are great and I can make up for a pair of slow ones. The final week of the Write-A-Thon will be polishing the story and trying to get it sold to a local Sci/Fi publisher. I think the 1k/day is a lot less terrifying. Heheh.
