Some really good ones
Okay, about half an hour ago I finished Amberlight by Sylvia Kelso, whom I've met at WisCon. My classmate Cindy Ward said it was the best book she's read all year. I was skeptical myself--not because of inherent traits in Sylvia, or Cindy; just my usual weary reviewer's cynicism. I've read a lot of other people's favorite books.
It was very good. I quickly devoured it. Sad and pretty and believable and fierce.
I had to pick the best book I reviewed for the Seattle Times today, too. I've reviewed 15 books this year. 5 of them were the best: Time's Child by Rebecca Ore, Thirteen by Richard K. Morgan, Spook Country by William Gibson, The New Moon's Arms by Nalo Hopkinson, and The Hearts of Horses by Molly Gloss. Only 3 of them were SF. One's a spy thriller, and one's a freakin Western! But they're all the best.
Anyone else read any of these?

Good to hear about the Kelso book! She's an interesting person.
And thanks for reminding me of the books that I meant to read this year, but haven't.
The Gibson book I loved, but I'm his ideal reader.

I haven't read the Gibson book yet, athough it's high on my must-buy list.
I'm finishing off Joe Hill's collection 20th Century Ghosts and it's fantastic. A must-read for all horror aficionados.

I've read two of your five: the Gibson and the Hopkinson, and liked them both a lot.
I haven't looked at my lists of everything I've read this year, but I have to say that way up near or at the top is Susan Palwick's Shelter, a wonderful, horrible, and powerful novel.

Glad you liked those two also, Neile. I was entranced with Spook Country's Tito. But one of my friends told me she's a Milgrim woman through and through (Milgrim was the "high end junky" with a love for Medieval history).
I read Shelter for the SF Book Club, and was really wowed. I fell in love with that Mr. Rogers house. Yeah, another good one. I didn't review it, though, and for the Times I was spozed to limit my choice to books I reviewed.
I thought 20th Century Ghosts was fabulous, too. And Hill's novel, Heart Shaped Box was even better, IMO.
So glad there are good books out there and we get to read them.
Anything else I mighta missed?
