It's quiet. Too quiet.

Conversation seems to have died out, so I'm going to be nosy.  I prefer to think of it as getting to know my potential classmates, but I guess it could be construed as sizing up the competition.  I won't ask anything too obvious or revealing (no "how long have you been writing" or "who's your favorite writer").  I'll post my own answers below.

1) Let's start with pets.  How many and what flavors?

2) What television show do you watch that is a guilty pleasure?

3) What's on your iPod (or CD collection...or 8-tracks) that people who know you might not guess?

4) What's your favorite kind of pasta and why?

5) Imagine you get into CW, we all become successful, and they make a movie about our time in Seattle.  What actor/actress would play you in he movie?

6) Whatr's your favorite element on the periodic table?

7) What animal would your patronus be?  (Yes, I've dipped into Harry Potter.  Sue me.)

8) In one word, describe your car.

9) What is your favorite sound?

10) Paper or plastic?

And now my answers:

1) 4 pests...er, pets.  2 cats, 2 dogs.  One cat is a scale model of the other.  One weiner dog named Nickelpede (bonus points if you know the source of that one).  The other's a mutt named Duke, after my grandfather (who had the nickname after John Wayne).

2) Most of them.  Specifically?  Wipeout.  Long live the big balls! (That's not dirty, just suggestively named.  I promise.)

3) Kermit the Frog singing "Rainbow Connection".

4) Jumbo shells.  They are delicious stuffed with ricotta.  And I like to make them talk.

5) Brendan Fraser, but he'd have to grow a goatee.  (Technically it's a Van Dyke, I guess.)

6) Florine.  I was always fascinated by hydrofloric acid.

7) Penguin, baby.  Doobie, doobie doo.

8) Cluttered.

9) My daughter's laugh, of course.  Followed by the "Ah!" sound of a child learning something that previously confused them.

10) Plastic.  I can carry more that way.

Now I want to hear from everyone else.  Hey, someone had to break the ice.  Ironically, I'm a bit of an introvert in person.  I want to know stuff about you in case we're in Seattle together so we have something to talk about.

I have a new favorite sound.

I have a new favorite sound.  It goes "Ring-ring. Hello, I'm calling from Clarion West.  You're in!"

Sadly, I have never heard my favorite sound.  :(

Yet--you haven't heard your

Yet--you haven't heard your favorite sound yet!  :)  I'm keeping hope for you and everyone on the message board.  :)

I'm stalling.  Oh,

I'm stalling.  Oh, well.

1) Let's start with pets.  How many and what flavors?

Two cats, male, sweet and gentle unless it's four in the morning.

  2) What television show do you watch that is a guilty pleasure?

I watch almost no TV.  Does "Good Eats" count?

3) What's on your iPod (or CD collection...or 8-tracks) that people who know you might not guess?

I listen to damn near everything, which is no surprise to people who know me.

4) What's your favorite kind of pasta and why?

Any shape of pasta with butter, salt, and garlic.  Can't stand sauce.  Very boring eater.

5) Imagine you get into CW, we all become successful, and they make
a movie about our time in Seattle.  What actor/actress would play you
in he movie?

Kathy Bates.  She's a few years older, but I like her style.

6) Whatr's your favorite element on the periodic table?

Oxygen.  We need it to live, but it is the great destroyer.

7) What animal would your patronus be?  (Yes, I've dipped into Harry Potter.  Sue me.)

White Shark.

8) In one word, describe your car.

Cluttered.

9) What is your favorite sound?

The heralding wind through the trees annoucing the coming rain.

10) Paper or plastic?

Cloth.

Stephanie - Skins is pretty good, and comes in manageable chunks (8-10 episodes per season, almost 4 seasons so far), the first season remains the best though. I liked it for its initially more realistic portrayal of teenagers, rather than the teens that exist in shows like the OC (which I also enjoyed, just sayin').

Corinne - That's exactly how I see both those shows, more so with True Blood, which I find delicious but also have a lot to moan about afterwards.

Cassie - I love that you know what I mean! The sound kinda creeps me out, but it also makes me happy because summer usually means so many good things.

Sara, I just noticed that

Sara, I just noticed that Skins is available to view online through my Netflix subscription.  I will definitely check this show out!  :)

I think True Blood annoys me

I think True Blood annoys me with its storytelling, and Glee because of the myriad of social issues they pride themselves on tackling -- and then do so in an awfully misguided, overly privileged way.

And yet, there's singing and dancing, so I'll be watching. I have a major soft spot for musicals.

http://saraveal.com   Same

Same re: Glee! I feel waves of irritation by the "very special" territory it often veers into, but then I'm quickly distracted and appeased by singing-and-dancing awesomeness. My attitude is mainly "meh", they can do whatever, as long as they keep with the moves and tunes.

I too have a major soft spot for musicals... they make everything better! Have you seen Cry Baby or the original Hairspray? It sucks that I no longer live in a city that has musicals. One of the things I miss most about London.

With True Blood, the opening sequence and music is just so entrancing that it wipes away any misgivings I had about the previous episode.

The True Blood opening

The True Blood opening sequence is AMAZING. I think that, and the Dexter intro, are my favourites of all time. (True Blood has better music, though.)

And musicals -- sadly I haven't seen either of those. We do have musicals here, but they're translated, which loses a lot of the charm. I've seen Mamma Mia, Cats and The Lion King in Dutch, and got to see Chicago on Broadway two-ish years ago. I wanted to watch Hairspray or Wicked as well, but I only had four days there, so never got around to it. Mostly I watch a lot of movie adaptations (or originals), like Hairspray, Chicago, Rent, the Joss musicals, etc. And just listen to a lot of the music on repeat.

My current favorite intro

My current favorite intro music is Psych.  "I know, you know..."  I am tempted to make it my ringtone.

I am a man that watches Glee.  Yes, a straight man.  I enjoy it.  The grown-ups' plots piss me off more than anything.  Sue Sylvester may be the best character on television right now.

Oh, Will's plots. Sigh.

Oh, Will's plots. Sigh. Let's not even go there.

And hey, there's nothing to be ashamed of. There's singing and dancing. We all understand the appeal ;)

1) Let's start with pets.

1) Let's start with pets.  How many and what flavors? I've never owned a pet, but I am capable of loving animals, particularly furry felines.

2) What television show do you watch that is a guilty pleasure? Make that shows: Castle, 30 Rock, The Office, Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice.  At one time, I was a Lost junkie, but I'm living clean and sober now.  FlashForward is tempting me, though...

3) What's on your iPod (or CD collection...or 8-tracks) that people who know you might not guess? Everything from Abba to Zofka, from classical to electronic.

4) What's your favorite kind of pasta and why? Any kind with red sauce because white sauce is just wrong.

5) Imagine you get into CW, we all become successful, and they make a movie about our time in Seattle.  What actor/actress would play you in he movie? Tempestt Bledsoe; quite a few people said I resembled her when I was a child.

6) What's your favorite element on the periodic table? Ne.  Everyone deserves to bask in the glow.

7) What animal would your patronus be?  (Yes, I've dipped into Harry Potter.  Sue me.) An eagle.

8) In one word, describe your car. American

9) What is your favorite sound? Rain

10) Paper or plastic? Every writer needs paper!

http://saraveal.com 1) Let's

http://saraveal.com

1) Let's start with pets.  How many and what flavors? None at the moment. My family isn't good with animals, but I'm hoping to get a kitten next time I'm settled somewhere. I've had seven hamsters (most of them secret, I went through a hamster-addiction phase between 12-14, cured by a mass death), three cats (first killed by rat poisoning, second decapitation by gate, third wisely ran off to live with my grandma), one guinea pig (smothered by rabbit), one rabbit (given away to neighbour after guinea-pig smothering), and a German Shepherd (given away to German man when we left Tanzania).

2) What television show do you watch that is a guilty
pleasure?
Make that shows too! I'd probably classify everything I watch as a guility pleasure, but here are a few: Glee, True Blood, Skins, Misfits, American Idol (I really try NOT to watch it, as in theory I despise reality shows, but get suckered in whenever its on around me - its the singing).

3) What's on your iPod (or CD collection...or 8-tracks) that
people who know you might not guess?
Im not really, and have never been, one of those people that "exudes" a particular music taste. Perhaps the Disney Princess collection?

4) What's your favorite kind of pasta and why? Farfalle for the name and shape. Ravioli for the eating.

5) Imagine you get into CW, we all become successful, and
they make a movie about our time in Seattle.  What actor/actress would
play you in he movie?
Maybe America Ferrara? People think we look similar.

6) What's your favorite element on the periodic table? Helium.

7) What animal would your patronus be?  (Yes, I've dipped
into Harry Potter.  Sue me.)
A meerkat. I'm always looking around.

8) In one word, describe your car. Nonexistant.

9) What is your favorite sound? The strange summery sound. I don't know if it exists outside of the UK, but when it's a really hot day in a grassy place, there's this drone, as if the heat has a voice.

10) Paper or plastic? Paper.

I don't know if it exists

I don't know if it exists outside of the UK, but when it's a really hot day in a grassy place, there's this drone, as if the heat has a voice.

I've been lurking around on this forum for awhile, but I just wanted to drop in and say that I know exactly what you're talking about.  I'm from Texas, where it's summer about six months out of the year, and you can hear that sound everywhere.  I've never heard anyone else describe it.

So... pretty cool!

Now that you mention it,

Now that you mention it, Glee and True Blood are guilty pleasures of mine too. I watch and enjoy both, but they also annoy the crap out of me at times, and I'm far too aware of their flaws to categorise them as regular pleasures. (Which, er, sounds kind of wrong. But you know what I mean!)

Yes--I don't know how I

Yes--I don't know how I could've forgotten True Blood.  I love that show!  :)  I've heard lots of people talking about Skins, but I've never seen it; I'll have to check it out!

I love the way you described the sound of summer!  :)

grewvie, Whedonverse viewing

grewvie, Whedonverse viewing just shows that you have taste (not guilt)!

Smile

Well played, Tracie, well

Well played, Tracie, well played!

iieeeeeeeee! I submitted my

iieeeeeeeee! I submitted my Clarion app today, and did my CW one a month ago. After the Clarion app, I'm kind of freaking, so I thought I'd participate in 'get to you know you central,' Oso. How's everybody doing? I'm trying to spend my mornings working on a novel, but some days they're pretty slow going. Today I played hooky to fix up a short story, which I promptly included in the aforementioned app. Some days I wish I could just stick my head in the sand, I tell you.

On with questions, of which I'm fairly certain you can gain all the answers to password 'secret question' reset forms! Yay! Robots and scripts are one.

1) Pets--I have a cat. Her name is Mikah. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCMVUmt1jeQ

Yes, I am the lady who puts videos of her pets on the internets. I have another one with a dog who may or may not be about to be eaten by humans.

2) TV shows--I don't know about guilty pleasures because guilt is an emotion that only endures in my stories. In real life, though, my favorites were/are/have been: Buffy, Freaks & Geeks, Peep Show, and Arrested Development. Maybe a guilty pleasure would be anything Joss Whedon related?

3) People might not know that I have a sickening addiction to cheesy light AM soul radio. I will listen to Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers without blinking an eye. But then again, they might not realize I also like punk music like The Dead Milkmen or Fugazi. That pretty much defines who I am, right there.

4)  I'm trying to not have favorite pasta anything on account of allergies, but angel hair=more yummy than Jesus.

5) I would be the cranky old bat who wouldn't sign off for rights for a movie, unless somehow they brought back to life John Hughes and made it a "coming of age" story set in the 1980s. Only then would I let Crispin Glover (who looks nothing like me) get the role of a lifetime by dressing in drag and dying his hair red and saying a lot of things about animal rights and jogging attire.

6) I like all the elements. Life wouldn't be possible without 'em.

7) For a patronus, I would have half-cat, half-hawk. Two sides, forever opposed, forever enjoined by the twitch of my wand.

8) Messy

9) The song that wakes me up every morning.

10) I'm a fan of paper because we all gotta have something to write on. But, for environmentalists' sakes, I say reusable bags--that way I can mark on them and keep my words semi-permanent (at least, until a good washing).

Okay, sorry so long. Helped me vent, though. Thanks!

Sorry, I just finally got on

Sorry, I just finally got on board.

I'm from Florida, and I applied last year to Clarion but not Clarion West. This time, I'm switching. May yet apply to the other workshop, but probably couldn't afford it if I got accepted.

1) Pets: Five cats and a lab/mutt. Two of the cats live inside and three inside.

2) TV: Sigh. True Blood is the guiltiest flavor of all. It's like eating Riesen caramels; it's delicious and makes me feel queasy at the same time. And I can't stop.

3) iPod: Lady Gaga. I can't explain why she's in there with all the folk and classic rock.

4) Pasta: Soba noodles or Mai Fun, yum. Not sure why, maybe a texture thing. Plus, I like Asian food.

5) Actress: not that she looks like me, but maybe Rachel Weisz, in little horn rim glasses. I'd like to look like her.

6) favorite element: Oxygen. Don't know where I'd be without it.

7) patronus: a little cat with silver tabby stripes

8) car: sedan

9) favorite sound: the rain, or silence

10) Paper or plastic? I'm partial to the homemade shopping bags my friend makes.

1) Let's start with pets.

1) Let's start with pets.  How many and what flavors?

Two part-time dogs, Akitas, male + female, huge and fluffy and adorable.
One full-time cat, female, neurotic, easily bribed, the next step in feline evolution.

 2) What television show do you watch that is a guilty pleasure?

I can't think of any. I'm very open about what I enjoy :D (TV-wise, anyway. Notsomuch with music...)

3) What's on your iPod (or CD collection...or 8-tracks) that people who know you might not guess?

Depends on where they know me from. Some would be baffled at Sugababes, others would gawk at The Rolling Stones or The Who. I enjoy a pretty wide variety of music.

4) What's your favorite kind of pasta and why?

Regular spaghetti with terribly boring sauce, because I'm a difficult eate.

5) Imagine you get into CW, we all become successful, and they make
a movie about our time in Seattle.  What actor/actress would play you
in he movie?

People have said Thora Birch somewhat resembles me.

6) Whatr's your favorite element on the periodic table?

Hg/Mercury.

7) What animal would your patronus be?  (Yes, I've dipped into Harry Potter.  Sue me.)

... I'm not sure. Possibly a dog. Terribly lazy when I have the opportunity, but easily excitable and with very narrow interests.

8) In one word, describe your car.

Bike-like.

9) What is your favorite sound?

The sound of my Google Notifier informing me of new e-mail. More because of what it implies than the sound itself. Yes, I'm terribly needy ;)

10) Paper or plastic?

We don't really get paper bags here, so I'll opt for plastic.
