Perhaps people are starting to get called...?

I don't know whether this is good news or bad news for you, but look at the end of this link (a blog by someone who is going to Clarion UCSD)

So the calls for Clarion West have started...hope everyone here gets one soon.

Comments

Eep! Now to wonder if they only called him/her because of the CSD acceptance, or if they've pretty much finalised their list already...

I'd say it's good news, either way. Means that one person who'd otherwise have gotten waitlisted can not get in!

I disagree with the ability to draw any conclusion calls are being made. First, he withdrew his candidacy, he did not reject an acceptance. Yes, it could be a secretive way of telling us he told them no, but we can't confirm.

Second, when he got into csd he may have called, and been given the choice at that moment. He may or may not have had the pleasure, and he may or may not have been the only in that situation. We cannot draw a conclusion with the data.

As it reads id say he simply made a courtesy call and told them no, at which point they withdrew him without saying more. After all, if he called to say I withdraw, what would the benefit of them saying, "are you sure, you can come here too," be?

Id say we can only assume no notifications have been made yet as it appears he was definite on where to go and cw was his second choice.

I hope that eases tension, as I know my conclusion has settled my own heart

Wha? It says pretty clearly that he e-mailed Clarion West, and they promptly called to offer a spot. The only question is whether they're ready to call others, too, or if they rushed this one because of his CSD acceptance.

Shhhhh let me live in my own world.

I read it wrong for some reason. I assumed post-scripts was some other workshop and he turned them down. Lol I'm such a noob. Yep you're right, but it doesn't mean they've called others. Though it does seem likely!

I was in such a hurry to read it before my job started at work!

Hee! I was so confused there.

I suspect I'm going to spend the entire evening staring at the phone. Sigh.

Yeah, I see what Corinne is saying.  The journal entry clearly states he was given a choice.  Also, the CW application guidelines state that if you hear about another acceptance to let them know so they can inform you about where you stand.  The point in this is to let an applicant know about the choice he or she has to make.  I didn't see where this blogger stated CSD was his or her first choice...or what final decision he or she made.  Maybe I'm not reading it correctly?  I don't want to confuse anyone.  Either way, we're about halfway through the month so it won't be long now!  :)

It definitely looks like he went with CSD.

I'm so antsy now. (Not that I haven't already been for the past few weeks...)

(Also, it's Corinne - one R, double N. *g*)

Yes, I noticed that and changed the spelling.  Sorry!  :)

Hee. Lots of people get it wrong, no worries!

Yah so now iim even more leery of the dreaded number (1) next to new and inbox on my hotmail. Ugh, good luck everyone. I've got a brand new baby boy to keep me busy at least, and I suppose id rather just know one way or the other at this point.

Yes, good luck to you, too!  Here's to hoping we all meet in Seattle this summer.  :)

I still haven't seen a single rejection letter from clarion west. Has anyone else? Perhaps they're doing things opposite of csd, either way news soon would be grrreat.

I think you're right; I think they're doing things differently this year.  I noticed in the 2009 thread, a few people posted their acceptances early and this seemed to make people nervous.  I don't know what's worse: finding out people are getting called or not hearing about anyone receiving a response.  :)

I didn't know you applied this year, Stephanie. (this is SDB, right?) Perhaps my lack of recent LJ reading is showing. Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks, Rachel!  :)

Oh! Turns out I sort of know you too. I added you to my LJ friends list the other day.

I added you, too!  :)

Here's to hoping we get to meet in person this summer!!!  :)

I'm flailing around with giddy glee at the thought alone :D

(And then I remind myself of the odds and come back to planet Earth. But still!)

I love the difference between last year's thread and this year's, by the way.

"They're calling people!" vs. "Perhaps people are starting to get called...?"

I don't know why. It just amuses me :D

So I just got an email by a guy named ren and the subject line was clarion.

Can we say heart attack? It was from a guy who had a blog saying he didn't get into clarion west. Id asked if he got rejected or didn't apply. That was like a week ago, and I didn't expect to receive a reply. He just told me he was upset he didn't get into csd and he had not applied to cw. Panic averted, and we now have zero leads on cw rejections. Hope that clears up everyone elses answer to that old question.

Ha ha!  I noticed that, too, Corinne!  :)

Wow, this thread erupted out of nowhere.  I'm so jealous I wasn't the one to break this, but for all my research, I didn't find it._______

My analysis is that this is good news for everyone here.  If this person was only called AFTER he withdrew his application, that means calls haven't been going out all along to the acceptees.  Maybe they are getting started now, maybe they aren't, but we now know they hadn't all gone out already.  Plus, that's another spot open for us, right?_____

My thoughts exactly! But that they were able to offer him the spot DOES mean they must be pretty close to finalising the list.

That's right, Oso.  If they were able to offer him a seat, that means the list isn't full yet.  Definitely good news!  :)

Someone on my blogroll commented that she just got news about attending a certain prestigious writing workshop. And her name isn't on the ClarionSD list.

So it's not necessarily CW, but, er... it could be.

So people that got accepted to csd knew when we were getting our rejection letters and just couldn't tell us. What conclusions can we draw here?

Draw no conclusions until April 1st!  :)

Bah! I'm throwing my ego to the ground in what will be a never ending punching match.

Hey all.  2009 CW graduate here.

I know you can't help but be anxious and looking for any hint of your application status, but let me assure you of several things:

1) You will hear your status in the appointed time.  The site says by the end of March.  So just assume you'll hear on March 31st, and that way when/if you hear earlier it will be a nice surprise.

2) As persons start to receive their notifications, don't read anything into the order in which they are sent out (or indeed into the rejections).  Last year there was a span of days between the first notification and the last.  But that didn't mean anything.  Someone getting their acceptance notice early in the notification process does not mean that their story was the best or the favorite.  Someone getting their rejection notice early in the notification process does not mean their story was the worse.

What you have to understand is that there are a number of readers/judges who receive everyone's applications.  Those readers/judges do not each read the stories in the same order, so it may just be random chance that your story happened to read by all the judges early on, and their opinions thus returned early enough that a tentative decision could be made on that story while the judges were still reading other stories.  And often a number of stories will get equal final "scores" and have to go into a kind of second round tie breaking process, etcetera.  In other words, there is nothing that can really be inferred from the order in which the notifications go out.

You should also remember that there are a limited number of slots.  So a rejection simply means that it was the cumulative decision of the judges that the 18 accepted students would potentially gain the most from attending THIS YEAR, it does not necessarily mean that your writing is bad or that your application letter was bad or anything like that.

3) Write.

You submitted to Clarion West.  That automatically shows you are serious about writing speculative fiction and is itself something to be proud of.  But what remains true is that the most important thing you can be doing right now to succeed as a writer, as at any time, is to write.  And submit.

I CHALLENGE YOU ALL TO WRITE A NEW SHORT STORY IN THE NEXT WEEK.  Not only will this help distract you, but if you are accepted to CW you will need to be able to complete a short story in a week anyway, so it is good practice.  And best of all, you will have a new short story to show for it, which will be something to celebrate whether you get into CW or not.  If you wish, I will be happy to critique whatever story you produce as a result of this challenge as added incentive, for whatever that is worth.

Best of luck to you all.

Cheers,

Randy Henderson

This advice from the guy whose robot armies were ready to march on Seattle while he waited last year?

-Oso/Scott

Pewpewed

But I do want that critique...hrmmmmm. when I get home, if a million things aren't in the way, ill work on my short I just started

Dear Scott Baker,

Your IP has now been fed into the targeting system of my robot armies.  Thank you for volunteering as a test subject for the Henderson Systems Chocolate Pudding Ear Injection Missile Platform 2.0.  Please do not wear hats or earphones for the next 24 hours as (additional) damage may occur during the test as a result.

Sincerely,

Randy

So... how much for this robot army? 'Cause it seems like it worked pretty well for you last year.

How much for my robot army?

1 Billion dollars (Canadian.  Or Euros), a slice of the best banana cream pie in the world, an open-ended book deal, retrieving my original body from the bastard aliens who stole it, and a time machine (preferrably the iTime, not the cheap MS knockoff Zingularity).

Or possibly a caramel banana peanutbutter milkshake if it is of sufficient deliciousness.

Randy

Oh how I have missed Randy this year!

I do request that the chocolate pudding ordinance be replaced with light strawberry yogurt ordinance as I am trying to watch my weight.  If not, then send the double dark chocolate ordinance so I might properly indulge during impact.

-Oso/Scott

Ooooh, a critique?

Indeed.  But I ask that people be on their honor to send me only a story they write in the next week.  Please don't send me an old story.

Also, you probably all know about online workshops, but if not I recommend workshopping your writing in one (assuming you cannot find a local live writers group to join).  Examples are:

www.critters.org (I believe this one is free.  The quality of the critiques vary wildly as a result).

http://sff.onlinewritingworkshop.com/ - this one costs $49 a year, but as a result of that minimal filter there tends to be a higher number of professional authors who use this site and as a result the critiques you receive may be of higher quality.

Cheers,

Randy

Dangit, Randy! Your chocolate pudding is gumming up the mailroom again.  And get those robots out of the CW lobby, will ya?

*grumble*  Them mad geniuses.  You give 'em the world, and they think they can take over a workshop.

Sandra

You guys are awesome! Thanks for making me laugh this morning. I am super sick and SO unhappy about it, but now I have smiled. The rest of the day can be faced.

I hope you feel better soon, Tracie!

No ickies!  Stay hydrated, and get well soon.

Thanks for the good vibes. I need to get better so I can do something more constructive with my time than watch every single episode of "The Guild" in one sitting. I have a crick in my neck from hunching over the computer.

I have no idea if they've already called everyone or not, but they've definitely started. Apparently the official list will be published on Friday.

(No, they haven't called me. I have it from a different source.)

So i take it no one from the forums has been called yet?  Either that or the CW opted for a similar vow of secrecy as the C SD acceptances apparently had.

My sources suggest that acceptees have been asked to keep it under their hats.  There is always the possibility that they will wait to contact forum regulars (with our big mouths) last.  I'm kind of clinging to that hope, actually.  Embarassed

What he said.

I'm killing myself over here with my speculation and assumption and fears. Sigh. I'm just gonna go write, or something.

I know. It would just be nice to know, over here. I just want that email to arrive, or whatever it is, so I can know and move on. I'd like to dance the limbo, not dance in limbo, so to speak.

I write every morning so I avoid all the mind bungling that steadily progresses throughout the day, but man alive...it's getting a little nutty up in the writing nest. My characters want to absorb nano-computer-tech-crud into their skin so they can infiltrate and collaborate with the innards of CWHQ's databases. And this novel is supposed to deal with boozers and cops! No nano-nothing!

I do want to say that I think it's exciting for everyone who gets in and I wish them all the best! Unfortunately, the secrecy veil is already slipping, so it just makes everyone else nervous. Case in point: http://bit.ly/dzBfhy

Power on, CW compatriots.

Incoming chaos. Now ask yourselves this. Is that person the same one corinne had heard of? Are either of them the same one oso found out about? Yikes...

That's not cool, dude named Mike Alexander. But, congrats to him anyhow.
