Excerpt

Right away she could tell it was bad. Even before she turned to face the man in the doorway, she heard his dragging step, the ragged breathing. Now she froze, taking him in, tasting heart's blood in her mouth. It had been years...but now he stood on the threshold of her clinic, bracing his shoulder against the wall. Santo had returned at last, as a ghost, a nightmare, his slender brown body wrapped in the white satin robe of the arena. The gleaming fabric was dappled with bright, slowly expanding red blooms.

On a good night, it would have been some other man’s blood.

This was not a good night.

Bio

I attended the Clarion West Writers Workshop in the summer of 1990. First pro sale was published in the June 1996 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I've since published stories and poetry in H.P. Lovecraft’s Magazine of Horror, the Vancouver Courier, and various anthologies. In 2006 I was the first prize-winner of the Best Fantastic Erotica Contest sponsored by Circlet Press, with a short story called “Monsoon.”

Since 1994, I've worked primarily as a reviewer and a developer in the computer gaming industry. I've built worlds and contributed background fiction to a number of popular PC titles, including Homeworld; Ground Control; Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura; Homeworld: Cataclysm; and most recently Sword of the Stars; Sword of the Stars 2; and Fort Zombie.

Publications

I have two books and a game available right now. The books are The Deacon's Tale and Monsoon and Other Stories. The game is Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter.

Writing Description

I write in multiple genres, but most often in science fiction and horror.

Writing Goals

During this Write-a-thon summer I have two goals: I will be finishing a military science fiction novel called "Via Damasco," and supporting a disabled family member, who must undergo knee replacement surgery and needs post-operative support. The goal I'm setting is to balance the two, and find enough hours each day to complete the work and still provide all the care that is needed.

Fundraising Goals

During last year's annual Write-a-thon, I had 87 supporters from 12 different countries around the globe. Collectively, those wonderful folks donated over $1100 to Clarion West.

In return for their generous donations of $5 or more, I gave my supporters password-protected access to the background fiction I was writing for an upcoming game, and sent out a free chunk of fiction every week. Those who donated $50 or more eventually received a postage-paid and personally signed copy of the novel I was working on at the time, as soon as it was released in trade paperback during the fall.

Can I top what I achieved last summer during this year's Write-a-thon? Honestly, I don't know. But I'm certainly going to try. What's more, I challenge every other Clarion West graduate to top it. For some of you, this should be very easy. And it's for a good cause, isn't it? :)
