From "The Oldest Game" by Mexican writer Alberto Chimal:

"And so it happened that in the land of Mundarna, at a crossroad one winter evening, two witches met. One was called Antazil; the other, Bondur. They were experts in their craft and in the art of transformation above all, which allows its adepts to change both appearance and nature. They came from far away places, equally distant, and hated each other.

The cause matters little: conflicts among the mighty are like our own, just as terrible or petty, even though they insist on presenting them as worthier of attention, horror or marvel, of bringing down people and nations. Suffice it to say that they had spoken, through magical means, and had agreed: none of them could tolerate the existence of the other, and so there—away from prying eyes, far from anyone who could be harmed—they would resolve their differences once and for all."

Bio

I grew up immersed in Spanish until I moved to Canada in 2005. When I'm not translating and/or nursing an arthritis flare-up, I can be found learning to build and play ukuleles.

I like train stations and buskers; fortunately, I get to enjoy both at the same time at least once a week.

I've never attended Clarion West, but it's on my to-do list.

Writing Description

When I begin a story, I set my eyes on the stars. "This one will really be science fiction," I tell myself. But I usually end up wandering the backroads of magic realism. Sometimes I wake up in bed with poetry and can't remember a thing of how I got there. Cosas que pasan.

Writing Goals

REVISED GOAL: I will post at least two translations a week from June 18 - July 27.

I assume most of the readers here will be English speakers, so I'll focus on translating works from Latin American and Spanish authors into my adoptive tongue.

Hey, I'll even take requests. For every contribution of $5 or more, I will translate a poem, song, or short story of your choice. All I ask is that the source material be in English or Spanish—and of a reasonable length. If you ever wondered what one of your works would read like in Spanish, this deal is for you ;-)
