SUMMARY:Mycology\, Decay\, and Metaphors for Community: A Deep Dive with T. Kingfisher and Daniel Winkler
DESCRIPTION:From fungus to slime molds\, nature has always held lessons for us in collapse\, renewal\, and connection—sometimes sticky\, sometimes horrifying\, always a little weird. Author T. Kingfisher (What Moves the Dead) and Daniel Winkler join Clarion West’s Deep Dives conversation series on the topic of Mycology\, Decay\, and Metaphors for Community\, moderated by Dominica Phetteplace \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT OUR SPEAKERS\n\n\n\nUrsula Vernon\, aka T. Kingfisher is the author and illustrator of far more projects than is probably healthy. She has written over fifty novels for both children and adults\, an epic webcomic called “Digger” and various short stories and other odds and ends. \n\n\n\nThe daughter of an artist\, she spent her youth attempting to rebel\, but eventually succumbed to the siren song of paint (although not before getting a degree in anthropology.) Ursula grew up in Oregon and Arizona\, went to college at Macalester College in Minnesota\, and stayed there for ten years\, until she finally learned to drive in deep snow and was obligated to leave the state. \n\n\n\nHaving moved across the country several times\, she eventually settled in New Mexico\, where she works full-time as an artist and creator of oddities. She lives with her husband\, her garden and his chickens.  \n\n\n\nDaniel Winkler grew up collecting and eating wild mushrooms in the Alps and is sharing his enthusiasm as a mushroom educator\, photographer and guide. The Puget Sound Mycological Society\, which he joined in 1996\, was instrumental in exposing Daniel to mycology and inspiring him to bend his career towards mushrooms. Daniel served on the PSMS board\, as vice president and is spearheading PSMS’s Bridle Trails State Park Funga study. Daniel published his “Fruits of the Forest – Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Edible Mushrooms” (available at mushroaming.com)\, a product of a life time of mushroom hunting\, the last twenty-nine years in the PNW.  Previously\, he published a series of fold-out field guides: Edible Mushrooms of the PNW\, Edibles of California (both Harbour Publishing)\, Amazon Mushrooms\, and Medicinal Mushrooms of North America\, as well as MycoCards “Boletes of Western North America”. As an ecologist and geographer Daniel focused on High Asia towards researching Tibet’s enormous fungal economy. His ethno-mycological Cordyceps research has been featured in National Geographic\, New York Times\, The Economist\, NPR\, BBC World Service\, etc. In the last decade\, Daniel started exploring neotropical fungi. With his travel agency MushRoaming Daniel is organizing mushroom focused eco-adventures since 2007\, current destinations are Bhutan and Colombia. \n\n\n\nDominica Phetteplace attended Clarion West in 2007 and currently sits on the board of directors. She is a writer and futurist and her work has been featured in publications such as Clarkesworld\, Asimov’s\, Analog\, Lightspeed\, Uncanny and many others. She appears on Fiction Science\, a podcast she cohosts with Alan Boyle. She is the author of Sword & Spore\, a fungal Arthurian novelette featured in Reactor.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission: Join us for the conversation starting at 7pm PT and the book signing to follow! \n\n\n\nVIP: As a VIP ticketholder\, you’ll add to your experience a VIP gift bag\, priority seating and book signing\, as well as access to the pre-event reception at 6pm featuring an intimate meet-and-greet with our speakers. \n\n\n\nVirtual: Watch the conversation from anywhere and participate in the Q&A! Registration is required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Deep Dives conversation series is a fundraiser for Clarion West! Your ticket purchases support all of our programming\, helping us continue to reach and serve bright new voices in speculative fiction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCan’t Attend? Make a Donation in Lieu of Attending!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Deep Dives\n\n\n\nClarion West’s Deep Dives series places an author of speculative fiction in a moderated conversation with a scientist or other expert in subject matter relevant to the author’s work. The goal is to contextualize the fantastic in ways that relate to our shared reality\, and help guide media literacy of speculative literature. The series itself is our fall fundraiser in support of Clarion West’s programming and each event includes a VIP reception\, conversation\, and book signing for the featured authors. The theme for 2026 is “Futures Less Dystopian.” \n\n\n\nThe Deep Dives conversation series is made possible in part by support from:

SUMMARY:Post-Dystopia Space Exploration: A Deep Dives Conversation with Mary Robinette Kowal and Dr. Sian Proctor
DESCRIPTION:Space exploration has always been the product of imagination\, science\, and perseverance! Join moderator K Wilson (The Astro Stud) in conversation with author Mary Robinette Kowal (The Calculating Stars) and retired commercial astronaut Dr. Sian Proctor about the current state of global space programs and our possible futures among the stars. \n\n\n\nThanks for joining us at Town Hall on September 12th! Didn’t make it? Check out the recording over on YouTube or start the video above. \n\n\n\n\nWatch the Replay\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT OUR SPEAKERS\n\n\n\nMary Robinette Kowal is the USA Today Bestselling author of twelve novels\, including Apprehension\, The Spare Man\, and the Lady Astronaut series. Her novel The Calculating Stars is one of only eighteen works to achieve the “triple crown\,” winning the Hugo\, Nebula\, and Locus awards in a single year. She is also a four-time Hugo winner\, a recipient of the Astounding Award for Best New Writer\, and a former President of SFWA. \n\n\n\nHer storytelling is uniquely shaped by a twenty-year career as a professional puppeteer. Performing for Jim Henson Productions and LazyTown\, she earned two UNIMA-USA Citations of Excellence—the highest honor in American puppetry. This background in physical performance informs the body language and characterization found in her prose. \n\n\n\nMary Robinette is a core cast member of the Hugo-winning podcast Writing Excuses and an acclaimed audiobook narrator for authors such as Neal Stephenson and Seanan McGuire. A collector of vintage manual typewriters\, she lives with her husband Robert\, their dog Guppy\, and their cat Elsie\, who uses Augmentative Interspecies Communication buttons to “talk.” She also has the distinct honor of having an asteroid\, (52691) Maryrobinettek\, named after her. \n\n\n\nDr. Sian Leo Proctor is a visionary poet\, artist\, educator\, and space explorer. In 2021\, Dr. Proctor made history as the first artist selected to become an astronaut with the SpaceX Inspiration4 mission. She is also the first woman commercial spaceship pilot and the only African-American woman to be a mission pilot. Find her on Instagram @Dr. Sian Proctor and experience her current project\, the EarthLight World planetarium show at the Boston Museum of Science. \n\n\n\nK Wilson\, also known by her public persona as The Astro Stud\, is a cosmologist\, science communicator\, writer\, and public speaker whose mission is to uplift and inspire individuals of all backgrounds in STEM\, particularly those of marginalized identities. With an ethos grounded in “unapologetic representation\,” she uses her presence\, voice\, and passion for storytelling to make the wonders of the Universe more accessible to all. Social justice and political advocacy are an integral practice in her SciComm and outreach efforts as she works to empower a diverse and global community of scientists\, scholars\, and academics. She is currently pursuing a PhD in cosmological physics at the University of Michigan. \n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission: Join us for the conversation starting at 7pm PT and the book signing to follow! SUMMARY:BIPOC Speculative Fiction Writers Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Come ready to write and relate in this quarterly meet-up for BIPOC writers based in Seattle. In each session we’ll encourage writers to generate new pieces in the company of like minded peers and invite openness and collaboration on getting through those tricky corners we get ourselves into with our work. There will also be the (optional) opportunity to share your work in progress. If you need inspiration\, we’ll have a selection of prompts to help get creativity flowing. Most importantly\, we’ll build connections in the BIPOC writing community from the greater Seattle area! \n\n\n\nThis drop-in group meets quarterly on the following dates: \n\n\n\nMonday\, July 20\, 6:00 – 8:00 PMMonday\, October 12\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM \n\n\n\nAttendance at all sessions is not required!  \n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nWhat to expect:  \n\n\n\nAfter introductions and an ice breaker\, the group will move into 30-ish minutes of generative writing with a brief and optional share back after each. After a short break\, we’ll come together for a final check-in and close with a discussion of what participants might hope to see at future meetups. Bring: \n\n\n\nYour preferred writing tools!  \n\n\n\nAccessibility:  \n\n\n\nThe main floor is wheel chair accessible and has two gender-neutral single stall bathrooms\, one of which is wheel-chair accessible. \n\n\n\nAbout the Host: \n\n\n\nRob Rodriguez is a 10+ year veteran of the coffee industry who decided moonlighting as a horror writer seemed like a “fun time”. Unsurprisingly\, they enjoy horror movies of all (most) genres at home or one of the many local independent theaters in Seattle. To recharge after lurking in the dark\, they spend time with close friends in town or online and enjoy scenic views across Seattle with their energetic\, party-loving dog\, Reggie. Together\, they explore trails or towns on weekends and make quite a dynamic duo.

SUMMARY:Steamy in Seattle 2026
DESCRIPTION:Need an escape that gives you the giggles\, helps you find a handsome orc\, or ensures there will be dragons? Join us for Steamy in Seattle 2026 where guests Kimberly Lemming and Stephanie Burgis are in conversation about cozy monster romance!  \n\n\n\nHappy Ever After may be just a fairy tail (pun intended)\, but an opportunity to laugh out loud and share your favorite story with like-minded friends is just part of the tea we’ll be serving for you.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll be serving a traditional high tea at Seattle’s beautiful Nordic Museum\, featuring a delightful selection of savory finger sandwiches\, scones\, salad\, and delectable sweet treats catered by Lovely Night Catering — and a custom tea blend provided by Friday Afternoon Tea. \n\n\n\nSo get dolled up (costumes encouraged!) for this utterly romantic opportunity to support the literary arts! Or just shoveling chocolate in her maw until she passes out on the couch. WEBSITE \n\n\n\nStephanie Burgis grew up in Michigan (USA)\, but now lives in Wales with her husband and two kids\, surrounded by mountains\, castles and coffee shops. She writes sparkling fantasy rom-coms\, including Wooing the Witch Queen (the first in the Queens of Villainy trilogy)\, the Regency Dragons series\, the Harwood Spellbook series\, and more.
