SUMMARY:Seattle Arts & Lectures Partner Event: Ted Chiang Presents
DESCRIPTION:Ted Chiang Presents: Love\, Hope\, and Other Four Letter Words with Kelly Link at Town Hall Seattle — Part of the SAL Ted Chiang Presents series. Find the Clarion West table at the event! \n\n\n\nDescribed as one of the “ten greatest Taiwanese computing personalities\,” and the former Digital Minister of Taiwan\, Audrey Tang has made it her mission to align technology with democracy\, and to counteract the polarization\, inequality\, loneliness\, and fear that digital technology has catalyzed. \n\n\n\nQ&A with Community Curated Series director Ted Chiang. \n\n\n\nDigital technology threatens to tear free and open societies apart through polarization\, inequality\, and loneliness. But in the decade since the weeks-long occupation of their parliament\, a diverse island of resilience has shown another way is possible. \n\n\n\nPlurality\, Tang’s open-source self-governed project\, co-written by E. Glen Weyl and a global community of dozens of contributors\, details how Taiwan achieved inclusive\, technology-fueled growth\, overcame the pandemic without lockdowns and the infodemic without takedowns\, entrusted its people to tackle shared challenges like environmental protection while capitalizing on a culture of innovation to “hack the government.” \n\n\n\nDigital Minister Audrey Tang and her collaborators – architects of Taiwan’s internationally acclaimed digital democracy – achieved inclusive\, technology-fueled growth that harnesses digital tools to strengthen both social unity and diversity. From intimate digitally empowered telepathy to global trade running on social networks rather than money\, Plurality offers tools to radically enrich relationships while making sure we leave no one behind. The ideas promise to transform every sector from health care to media\, as illustrated by the way it has been written: as a chorus of open\, self-governing collaboration of voices from around the globe. \n\n\n\nAudrey Tang is a software programmer known for revitalizing the computer languages Perl and Haskell and for building the online spreadsheet system EtherCalc in collaboration with Dan Bricklin. Audrey Tang served as Taiwan’s first Minister of Digital Affairs—making her the first non-binary official in the top executive cabinet—where she was tasked with helping government agencies communicate policy goals and managing information published by the government\, both via digital means. \n\n\n\nAudrey Tang served on Taiwan’s National Development Council’s Open Data committee and K-12 curriculum committee\, and she led the country’s first e-Rulemaking project. She has also worked as a consultant with Apple on computational linguistics\, with Oxford University Press on crowd lexicography and with Socialtext on social interaction design. She actively contributes to g0v (“gov zero”)\, a vibrant community that focuses on creating tools for the civil society with the call to “fork the government.” \n\n\n\nTed Chiang\, this year’s Community Curated Series director\, has won four Hugo\, four Nebula\, and six Locus Awards\, and his fiction has been reprinted in Best American Short Stories. His first collection Stories of Your Life and Others has been translated into twenty-one languages\, and the title story was the basis for the Oscar-nominated film Arrival. His second collection Exhalation was chosen by The New York Times as one of the 10 Best Books of 2019.

SUMMARY:Bushwick Book Club Partner Event
DESCRIPTION:Original music inspired by Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler — Part of the Banned Books Season! Find the Clarion West table at the event! \n\n\n\nThe year is 2024. The world teeters on the edge of chaos. An authoritarian president looms. Octavia Butler’s astonishingly prescient novel Parable of the Sower weaves together urgent themes of hope\, resilience\, societal change\, and individual perseverance. \n\n\n\n“[Parable of the Sower] succeeds on multiple levels. A gripping tale of survival and a poignant account of growing up sane in a disintegrating world.” — New York Times \n\n\n\n“This was a cautionary tale\, although people have told me it was prophecy. All I have to say to that is: I certainly hope not.” — Octavia Butler \n\n\n\nHeads up: Butler pulls no punches in detailing her dystopian landscape—brace yourself for many forms of human cruelty\, including racism\, murder\, and sexual assault.

Readers will find joy (and a little terror) and an affirmation that love goes on\, even when we cannot.Q&A with Community Curated Series director Ted Chiang.\n\n\n\nIn The Book of Love\, welcome to Kelly Link’s incomparable Lovesend\, where you’ll encounter love and loss\, laughter and dread\, magic and karaoke\, and some really good pizza. Late one night\, Laura\, Daniel\, and Mo find themselves beneath the fluorescent lights of a high school classroom\, almost a year after disappearing from their hometown\, the small seaside community of Lovesend\, Massachusetts\, having long been presumed dead. Which\, in fact\, they are. \n\n\n\nWith them in the room is their previously unremarkable high school music teacher\, who seems to know something about their disappearance—and what has brought them back again. Desperate to reclaim their lives\, the three agree to the terms of the bargain their music teacher proposes. In the end\, there will be winners and there will be losers. \n\n\n\nBut their resurrection has attracted the notice of other supernatural figures\, all with their own agendas. As Laura\, Daniel\, and Mo grapple with the pieces of the lives they left behind\, and Laura’s sister\, Susannah\, attempts to reconcile what she remembers with what she fears\, these mysterious others begin to arrive\, engulfing their community in danger and chaos\, and it becomes imperative that the teens solve the mystery of their deaths to avert a looming disaster. \n\n\n\nKelly Link\, a MacArthur “Genius Grant” fellow\, is the author of the collections Get in Trouble\, Stranger Things Happen\, Magic for Beginners\, and Pretty Monsters.
