SUMMARY:Steamy in Seattle 2026
DESCRIPTION:Need an escape that gives you the giggles\, helps you find a handsome orc\, or ensures there will be dragons? Join us for Steamy in Seattle 2026 where guests Kimberly Lemming and Stephanie Burgis are in conversation about cozy monster romance!  \n\n\n\nHappy Ever After may be just a fairy tail (pun intended)\, but an opportunity to laugh out loud and share your favorite story with like-minded friends is just part of the tea we’ll be serving for you.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll be serving a traditional high tea at Seattle’s beautiful Nordic Museum\, featuring a delightful selection of savory finger sandwiches\, scones\, salad\, and delectable sweet treats catered by Lovely Night Catering — and a custom tea blend provided by Friday Afternoon Tea. \n\n\n\nSo get dolled up (costumes encouraged!) for this utterly romantic opportunity to support the literary arts! This event is not just a fundraiser; it’s a celebration of emerging and underrepresented writers — particularly women in the field of speculative fiction.  \n\n\n\nClarion West still supports and encourages masks for COVID safety whenever possible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Guests\n\n\n\nKimberly Lemming is a USA Today bestselling author who is on an eternal quest to avoid her calling as a main character. She can be found giving the slip to that new werewolf that just blew into town and refusing to make eye contact with a prince of a far-off land. Dodging aliens looking for Earth booty can really take up a girl’s time. But when she’s not running from fate\, she can be found writing diverse fantasy romance. Or just shoveling chocolate in her maw until she passes out on the couch. WEBSITE \n\n\n\nStephanie Burgis grew up in Michigan (USA)\, but now lives in Wales with her husband and two kids\, surrounded by mountains\, castles and coffee shops. She writes sparkling fantasy rom-coms\, including Wooing the Witch Queen (the first in the Queens of Villainy trilogy)\, the Regency Dragons series\, the Harwood Spellbook series\, and more. She has also had eight fun MG fantasy novels published\, including theRaven Crown duology and the Dragon with a Chocolate Heart trilogy. A graduate of the Clarion West workshop\, she has had over forty short stories published in various magazines and anthologies\, and many of them are included in her collection Touchstones. WEBSITE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonate Today!\n\n\n\n\nSteamy in Seattle is a fundraising event supporting Clarion West’s programming including our annual programs\, sliding scale tuition\, and scholarship programs. Donations are encouraged! Use this form to give whenever the spirit moves you\, or participate in special segments during the event whether you are joining us in-person or online to make your donations in exchange for a fun prize or two. Or do both! We’re not going to stop you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFAQ\n\n\n\nTap each question to expand. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhere is Steamy in Seattle? +\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re returning to Seattle’s Nordic Museum in Ballard located at 2655 NW Market Street. The Museum is located on the corner of NW Market Street and 28th Ave NW\, adjacent to Habitude Salon and Western Fire and Safety. The area is serviced by Metro buses 17\, 40\, 44\, and the D Line. The event will also be streamed live.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat accessibility measures are in place for this event?+\n\n\n\n\nThe Nordic Museum is an ADA-compliant venue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat should I wear?+\n\n\n\n\nSteamy in Seattle is a traditional high tea with a fairytale twist. We encourage everyone to dress up in their favorite fairytale dresses and princely finery! If you aren’t sure what to wear\, we welcome garden party or country club casual. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere do I park?+\n\n\n\n\nThe National Nordic Museum’s parking lot is located on the south side of the building and can be accessed from the corner of NW Market St and 28th Ave NW. Parking starts at $2.00 per hour and must be paid at the parking kiosks located at the base of the stairs or online via Premium Parking(Opens an external site). \n\n\n\nAlternative parking options are available along NW Market Street\, in the residential neighborhoods surrounding the Museum\, and at the Hiram Chittenden Locks parking lot—a five-minute walk to the Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIs this a fundraiser?+\n\n\n\n\nYes! Funds raised from Steamy in Seattle support Clarion West writing workshops\, scholarships\, and free author and reader events year-round. These programs help bring prominent speculative fiction authors to Seattle and throughout the world through our virtual engagement.  \n\n\n\nYou are helping to support Clarion West just by attending! In addition\, you can help by raising your paddle during the intermission! Paddles will be distributed to guests attending in person at registration. Between the conversation and Q&A\, we’ll pause things and talk a bit about Clarion West’s work and invite you to “raise the paddle” to give at various tiers. Be one of the first 20 donors to raise your paddle and win a prize!  \n\n\n\nAll donations can be made on site during the event\, but donations made during Raise the Paddle will be counted separately. All major credit cards and checks are accepted on-site. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Partners\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHagen Insurance Partners

SUMMARY:Mycology\, Decay\, and Metaphors for Community: A Deep Dive with T. Kingfisher and Daniel Winkler
DESCRIPTION:From fungus to slime molds\, nature has always held lessons for us in collapse\, renewal\, and connection—sometimes sticky\, sometimes horrifying\, always a little weird. Author T. Kingfisher (What Moves the Dead) and Daniel Winkler join Clarion West’s Deep Dives conversation series on the topic of Mycology\, Decay\, and Metaphors for Community\, moderated by Dominica Phetteplace. \n\n\n\nThanks for joining us at SPL on September 24th! Didn’t make it? Check out the recording over on YouTube or start the video above. \n\n\n\n\nWatch the Replay\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT OUR SPEAKERS\n\n\n\nUrsula Vernon\, aka T. Kingfisher is the author and illustrator of far more projects than is probably healthy. She has written over fifty novels for both children and adults\, an epic webcomic called “Digger” and various short stories and other odds and ends. \n\n\n\nThe daughter of an artist\, she spent her youth attempting to rebel\, but eventually succumbed to the siren song of paint (although not before getting a degree in anthropology.) Ursula grew up in Oregon and Arizona\, went to college at Macalester College in Minnesota\, and stayed there for ten years\, until she finally learned to drive in deep snow and was obligated to leave the state. \n\n\n\nHaving moved across the country several times\, she eventually settled in New Mexico\, where she works full-time as an artist and creator of oddities. She lives with her husband\, her garden and his chickens.  \n\n\n\nDaniel Winkler grew up collecting and eating wild mushrooms in the Alps and is sharing his enthusiasm as a mushroom educator\, photographer and guide. The Puget Sound Mycological Society\, which he joined in 1996\, was instrumental in exposing Daniel to mycology and inspiring him to bend his career towards mushrooms. Daniel served on the PSMS board\, as vice president and is spearheading PSMS’s Bridle Trails State Park Funga study. Daniel published his “Fruits of the Forest – Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Edible Mushrooms” (available at mushroaming.com)\, a product of a life time of mushroom hunting\, the last twenty-nine years in the PNW.  Previously\, he published a series of fold-out field guides: Edible Mushrooms of the PNW\, Edibles of California (both Harbour Publishing)\, Amazon Mushrooms\, and Medicinal Mushrooms of North America\, as well as MycoCards “Boletes of Western North America”. As an ecologist and geographer Daniel focused on High Asia towards researching Tibet’s enormous fungal economy. His ethno-mycological Cordyceps research has been featured in National Geographic\, New York Times\, The Economist\, NPR\, BBC World Service\, etc. In the last decade\, Daniel started exploring neotropical fungi. With his travel agency MushRoaming Daniel is organizing mushroom focused eco-adventures since 2007\, current destinations are Bhutan and Colombia. \n\n\n\nDominica Phetteplace attended Clarion West in 2007 and currently sits on the board of directors. She is a writer and futurist and her work has been featured in publications such as Clarkesworld\, Asimov’s\, Analog\, Lightspeed\, Uncanny and many others. She appears on Fiction Science\, a podcast she cohosts with Alan Boyle. She is the author of Sword & Spore\, a fungal Arthurian novelette featured in Reactor.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission: Join us for the conversation starting at 7pm PT and the book signing to follow! \n\n\n\nVIP: As a VIP ticketholder\, you’ll add to your experience a VIP gift bag\, priority seating and book signing\, as well as access to the pre-event reception at 6pm featuring an intimate meet-and-greet with our speakers. \n\n\n\nVirtual: Watch the conversation from anywhere and participate in the Q&A! SUMMARY:BIPOC Speculative Fiction Writers Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Come ready to write and relate in this quarterly meet-up for BIPOC writers based in Seattle. In each session we’ll encourage writers to generate new pieces in the company of like minded peers and invite openness and collaboration on getting through those tricky corners we get ourselves into with our work. There will also be the (optional) opportunity to share your work in progress. If you need inspiration\, we’ll have a selection of prompts to help get creativity flowing. Most importantly\, we’ll build connections in the BIPOC writing community from the greater Seattle area! \n\n\n\nThis drop-in group meets quarterly. Attendance at all sessions is not required!  \n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nWhat to expect:  \n\n\n\nAfter introductions and an ice breaker\, the group will move into 30-ish minutes of generative writing with a brief and optional share back after each. After a short break\, we’ll come together for a final check-in and close with a discussion of what participants might hope to see at future meetups. Bring: \n\n\n\nYour preferred writing tools!  \n\n\n\nAccessibility:  \n\n\n\nThe main floor is wheel chair accessible and has two gender-neutral single stall bathrooms\, one of which is wheel-chair accessible. \n\n\n\nAbout the Host: \n\n\n\nRob Rodriguez is a 10+ year veteran of the coffee industry who decided moonlighting as a horror writer seemed like a “fun time”. Unsurprisingly\, they enjoy horror movies of all (most) genres at home or one of the many local independent theaters in Seattle. To recharge after lurking in the dark\, they spend time with close friends in town or online and enjoy scenic views across Seattle with their energetic\, party-loving dog\, Reggie. Together\, they explore trails or towns on weekends and make quite a dynamic duo.
