While much of the creation of poetry is personal and unique, poetry editors at all levels of the publishing process have developed ways to assist writers in the crafting of their work. Writers can use poetry editing techniques to hone their instincts and direct inspiration.
This two-part class is for beginning-to-intermediate writers who are looking for strategies to edit their work for publication.
Writers should come to the session with poetry they intend to edit and receive feedback on. In the first class, students will learn techniques to edit poems for tone, form, and emotional and narrative arcs.
In the second class, students will present a first-draft and second-draft of their work and collaborate with the instructor and classmates on the changes made as a result of the application of these techniques learned in the first class. Both classes will be 2 hours in length.
