I AM NOT A LEGAL PROFESSIONAL. But I have been selling fiction to various markets since 2006, and along the way I’ve learned some important lessons about negotiating with publishers. Which rights should you sign away? What clauses should you absolutely refuse? How much should you push back if an editor doesn’t want to negotiate? Every situation will be different, but I’ll offer some guidelines for figuring out what you’re comfortable with when selling your own work. (Full disclosure: I am the current Secretary of the Board for SFWA and my responsibilities include qualifying professional markets.)
