Introducing Carlos Hernandez

We have a change to announce for this summer’s instructor lineup. Now joining us for Week 3 is Carlos Hernandez! Carlos is a New York Times bestselling author of the critically acclaimed short story collection The Assimilated Cuban’s Guide to Quantum Santeria, the novel Sal and Gabi Break the Universe (winner of the 2019 Pura Belpré Award from the American Library Association), and its sequel, Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe.

Carlos is a Professor of English for the City University of New York. His oeuvre includes poetry, dramatic works, comics, and game writing and design. He has written for Marvel, including stories for Miles Morales, Spider Punk, and America Chavez. He and his wife, award-winning writer C. S. E. Cooney, are finalizing a tabletop role-playing game, Negocios Infernales, which is now available for preorder.

Although we’ll miss working with Malka Older this summer, she’s on to some very exciting things: She has been transitioning into the executive director role for the international organization Global Voices, which works with writers, translators, and activists to build empathy and understanding across borders by training and empowering people to share their lived stories. We wish her all the best in this amazing endeavor and hope to have an opportunity to bring her on in the future.
