DAF (Donor Advised Funds)
Your DAF simplifies your family’s annual giving to the charities of your choice.
Clarion West has served speculative fiction’s emerging writers for over 40 years! A DAF can help ensure your support goes even further. DAFs are more flexible and less cumbersome than establishing a foundation, and offer a number of tax incentives for you and your children to continue your legacy of supporting the literary arts.
Your support of our mission allows us to continue offering developmental programming and instruction to the next generation of speculative fiction’s literary icons in a time where it can be hard to dream. Clarion West pays writers as speakers and instructors in a time when employment is unstable, and their work is devalued. Through our author events, we connect writers and readers in community around speculative fiction as the luminary genre it can be in dark times.

What Is A DAF (Donor-Advised Fund)?
A tax-advantaged charitable giving account.
DAFs are often compared to a 401(k) for retirement savings or a Health Savings Account (HSA) for healthcare. Gifts made through DAFs are referred to as “grants”. You contribute cash or assets to your DAF, get the tax benefit upfront, invest the balance in the market, and make grants out to nonprofits over time.
Any person, couple, family — or even a company — can open a DAF account at more than 1,150 providers around the country. DAFs are offered by community foundations, charitable affiliates of financial institutions, national independent providers, and cause-specific entities.
DAFs have surged in popularity in recent years because they’re incredibly effective at increasing giving capacity and streamlining philanthropy — for donors big & small.
All DAFs are hosted by a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit (often affiliated with a financial or technology company), which makes the tax benefits possible when you contribute.
Why DAFs?
The short version is that recent changes at the federal level (namely the OBBBA) have impacted charitable giving in ways that limit tax incentives for donors. DAFs are exempt from these changes. For the long version, check out this explainer.
