Hagen Insurance Partners has sponsored Steamy in Seattle each year that we’ve held it! I reached out to Cindy Hagen, the owner, to see why she’s supporting Clarion West.

Marnee Chua: Tell us all about Hagen Insurance Partners, who do you work with?

Cindy Hagen: I’m an independent insurance agent specializing in health insurance for individuals, small businesses, and Medicare members. A significant portion of my clientele is Mental Health Therapists who run their own practices.

MC: You’re a boss lady! How did you end up running a health insurance agency? What do you like most about it?

CH: I don’t think anyone grows up dreaming of being an insurance agent, but I was able to start out very part time when my kids were young, and gradually increase my hours as they got into school full time.

I like helping people navigate the weirdness of insurance and find the plan that is best suited to their needs.

MC: What is the advice you give most often to people looking for affordable health insurance?

CH: Find an agent to help you! There is no reason to try to figure things out on your own.  I deal with this stuff all day, everyday.

MC: I understand you’re a Doctor Who fan, what about Doctor Who do you like and which is your favorite doctor?

CH: My whole family are Doctor Who fans — I love that it’s something that we can enjoy together.  I like all the doctors, and I’ve really been enjoying Ncuti Gatwa, the most recent regeneration — the joy and emotion he brings to the role is desperately needed in this world.  Did I mention his kilt?

MC: When someone asks you about your favorite books, what do you usually recommend?

CH: This is a hard question! I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon, and am a mystery fan, through and through. I’ve expanded my tastes over the years and love a good romance, historical fiction, fantasy, or science fiction book.  I love the library!  My recommendations depend on the person. Penny Reid, Elizabeth Wien, Kemper Donovan, and James Islington have been recent favorites. Will Wheaton reading John Scalzi’s Starter Villain was a delight!

MC: What book are you reading right now?

CH: I’ll admit that I can have as many as 3 books going at once — generally an audio book I listen to when exercising or doing chores, an ebook, and a physical book.

  1. Audio:  The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels
  2. Physical:  Daughter of a Pirate King
  3. Ebook:  The Bridge Kingdom

MC: You are also a dedicated board member, serving nonprofits with your time and experience: What do you find most rewarding and most challenging about being on boards?

CH: I like working with people for a common goal, and it’s nice to do something non-work related that feeds my soul.

MC: Thank you for sponsoring Steamy in Seattle all three years! What’s your favorite thing about the event?

CH: Who can say no to a tea party?  I enjoy hearing from the authors and spending an afternoon with folks who love books, stories, and sharing their passions with others.
