We are pleased to announce the R.S. Blum Feminist and Gender Fiction Writer Scholarship for writers addressing feminism and gender issues as a primary focus of their work.

R.S. Blum’s Clarion West class of 1998

Applications are open for the 2026 Six-Week Workshop. Offered every summer, Clarion West has over 800 graduates, including Russell L. Bates (winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival), Daniel Abraham (Hugo and International Horror Guild award-winning author), Sheree Renée Thomas (The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction), Ann Leckie (Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke award-winning writer), Nisi Shawl (multiple award-winning writer and editor based in Seattle), Isabel Cañas (Bram Stoker, Locus, and Endeavour award-winning author), Cadwell Turnbull (Neukom Institute, Ignyte, Shirley Jackson, Locus, and Lambda Literary award-winning writer) and many others.

Clarion West is known for uplifting diverse voices, our thriving community, and our dedication to craft. Our programs seek to create a more inclusive, welcoming, and safe space for all writers in the community, and our scholarship donors help make this vision possible.

We’re excited to highlight our newest scholarship, The R.S. Blum Feminist and Gender Fiction Writer Scholarship.

This scholarship is to support a writer of any gender addressing feminism and gender issues as a primary focus of their work. This full-tuition scholarship has been donated by R.S. Blum (CW ‘98) for writers with a focus on feminist topics or fiction that addresses protagonist issues with gender roles.

Eligible applicants can indicate their interest on the scholarship application form. Applicants should indicate financial need and state that their writing has a focus on feminist topics, feminist fiction, or an exploration of the demands of society’s gender roles or reflecting on fiction with a feminist theme, including but not limited to identity and experience.

The tuition for the 2026 Six-Week Workshop is $3,600. We’re committed to helping our accepted students get to the workshop, and with the help of scholarship donors and scholarships like this one, we do our best to meet the financial needs of everyone who requests tuition assistance! In recent years, up to 94% of our class has received some scholarship aid.
