ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS
Justin C. Key is a practicing psychiatrist and a speculative fiction writer. He is the author of the debut novel The Hospital at the End of the World and the story collection The World Wasn’t Ready for You. His stories have appeared in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Strange Horizons, Escape Pod, Lightspeed, and on Tor.com. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three children.
Lakshmi Krishnan, M.D., Ph.D., is a physician and literary scholar at Georgetown University, where she is Founding Director of Medical Humanities. She is a 2026–27 Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, where she is completing The Doctor and the Detective, the first book-length history of diagnosis and detective fiction, forthcoming from Johns Hopkins University Press. A dual-trained clinician-scholar, she earned her MD from Johns Hopkins and her doctorate in English literature from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, with postgraduate training in internal medicine and the history of medicine at Duke and Johns Hopkins. Her work examines diagnosis and clinical reasoning—how doctors know, and how they think they know—including the diagnostic imagination in the age of artificial intelligence. She is a frequent contributor of cultural criticism and reviews to the leading medical journal The BMJ, where she writes on fiction, film, television, and the cultural life of medicine, and she publishes The Workup, a Substack on medicine and culture. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, as well as grants and awards from the Mellon Foundation, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Academy of Communication in Healthcare.

About Deep Dives
Clarion West’s Deep Dives series places an author of speculative fiction in a moderated conversation with a scientist or other expert in subject matter relevant to the author’s work. The goal is to contextualize the fantastic in ways that relate to our shared reality, and help guide media literacy of speculative literature. The series itself is our fall fundraiser in support of Clarion West’s programming and each event includes a VIP reception, conversation, and book signing for the featured authors. The theme for 2026 is “Futures Less Dystopian.”
The Deep Dives conversation series is made possible in part by support from:
