Board Treasurer

Treasurer Position Overview 

Clarion West is seeking a treasurer to serve on the Board of Directors, to serve as adviser, provide oversight on the budget ($465,000 annually), and report to the board. The organization has a full-time executive director, investment manager, and accountant to manage the day-to-day financial operations. The treasurer assists in reviewing finances and accounting, and advises on significant investments. The position requires an average of 2-3 hours of work per month, with additional hours typically when setting the annual budget and reviewing tax documents. 

The Clarion West Treasurer is part of the executive committee on the board and works closely with the board chair and executive director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews monthly financial statements.
  • With the executive director, ensures tax-related documents and legal forms are filed on time.
  • Serves as chair of the finance committee. 
  • Presents financial information to the board at board meetings and helps interpret the status and strength of the organization’s financial position (for example, pointing out expected shortfalls and or excessive expenditures and seeking recommendations for corrective action).
  • Assists the executive director in preparing the annual budget and presenting it to the Finance Committee and the board for approval.
  • Acts as an additional signer on bank accounts and investment accounts.
  • Reviews and maintains oversight of the Finance Policy, presenting changes for board vote when necessary.
  • Works with the Investment Manager as needed to provide oversight for investment funds.
  • Discusses and shares fundraising needs with the development committee, board chair, and executive director.  

PENDING PROJECTS

Along with the ED and Finance Committee: 

  • Approve the development of a system for tracking the organization’s cash flow and solvency. 
  • Review and improve existing investment policies and planning. 
  • Work toward an annual audit or review by an outside CPA

LENGTH OF COMMITMENT:

3 years

TIME INVOLVEMENT:

  • 1-3 hours per month
  • Board meetings: 1 hour each month
  • Finance Committee meetings: 1-2 hours 2-3 times per year, as needed 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

This position is part of the Clarion West board of directors. 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND PAST EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong interest in finance and accounting
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality 
  • Interpersonal skills 
  • Experience with investment oversight
