Help Fund the Greg Bear Memorial Instructorship 2025
We’re pleased to announce that Astrid Bear is once again offering $1,250 to help fund the 2025 Greg Bear Memorial Instructorship — and we’re asking the community to take up the challenge to raise the remaining $3,750 to fully support the fund this year.

Few instructors embody the impact of generations of writers learning, teaching, and supporting each other more than Greg Bear. When we think about generations, we think about the authors who give back by supporting scholarships, volunteering, and mentoring new writers, as well as the students who go on to write successfully and return to teach for the workshop in their own time.
Greg taught for the Clarion West Writers Workshop three times, in 1988, 1993, and 1999. In the spirit of Greg’s contributions to the workshop, we are thrilled to bring new instructors to the Clarion West community.
The Greg Bear Memorial Instructorship will support Week 3 of the 2025 Six-Week Workshop with instructor Carlos Hernandez. Carlos is the author of the critically acclaimed short story collection The Assimilated Cuban’s Guide to Quantum Santeria, the novel Sal and Gabi Break the Universe (winner of the 2019 Pura Belpré Award from the American Library Association and one of Kirkus Reviews “Best Books of the 21st Century (So Far)”, and Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe. He’s written scores of short stories, poems, and works of drama, usually in the SFF mode, which have found homes in magazines such as Uncanny, Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, and many others. Recently, he’s written several comics for Marvel, both in-print and in digital formats, including stories for Miles Morales, Spider Punk, America Chavez, and a three-story arc for the Strange Academy series. By day, Carlos holds the title Professor of English for the City University of New York and is a game enthusiast and designer.
All contributions support the Six-Week Workshop and the instructors, students, and staff who make it happen. Your donations have a critical impact on our ability to bring these talented writers, editors, and instructors to our workshops.
